Have you ever abandoned a website on your phone because it’s just not mobile-friendly? Google is about to do the same thing. Recently, via the Webmaster Central blog, Google announced its intentions regarding mobile-friendly adoption, and its impact on organic search results.
“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.”
Mobile users made up 25 percent of Internet searches in 2014, a number slated to expand, according to an annual Internet trends report. Google wants to make sure the user experience for that growing population is as relevant as desktop searches.
Go Mobile or Go Home
What does this mean for your website? Google made it clear that cellphone-friendly and responsive websites will get preference in mobile search results, be better positioned on the page, and will likely get more traffic. Websites that are not mobile-friendly will get less of that expanding mobile organic traffic—and ultimately have to rely on the dwindling desktop audience. Essentially Google has given website owners an ultimatum: In the interest of providing the best user experience they have declared become mobile-friendly or suffer the consequences.
It is important to remember that not all mobile sites are created equally. Ideally, your mobile site will be a scaled-down version of your desktop site, optimized for use on mobile devices. This algorithm will rank mobile sites just like desktop sites—on a page by page basis, in which the pages need to correlate with your desktop site.
