What Medspa Websites Need to be Seen

Medical Website DesignIf you have a medical spa, there are certain things you need to have to stand out from the sea of day spas out there. You need a doctor overseeing the practice. You need aestheticians highly trained in the delivery of BOTOX and dermal fillers. You need a line of medical-grade skin care products. You need laser skin tightening procedures, maybe CoolSculpting. You need a host of facials and other more typical spa offerings.

And you need to be seen. That involves med spa marketing and that involves your med spa website.

That’s not as easy as you might think. Just having a freelance designer throw together a website for you isn’t enough. You need to adopt the latest med spa website design trends to be sure your site is seen, engaged with, and, in the end, interests a potential patient enough to make a phone call or start a chat.

Websites aren’t “discovered” by chance. With basically every business in every sector having a website, it takes expertise to both design and optimize your med spa website so that your site shows up when a potential patient in your area searches for “Laser skin tightening near me.”

That’s where we come in. At Advice Media, we’ve been leading the way in medical website design for 20 years. And we’ve made sure those sites are optimized for search, ensuring they not only look good but also get looked at. You can read about our search engine optimization strategies in other blogs and across our site. In this blog, let’s touch on what’s new in med spa website design.

Search is on the move

A common problem with current site design is the lack of attention to mobile usage. Your med spa site could look awesome to a woman who’s looking for Ultherapy treatments, as long as she’s looking at it on a big desktop monitor at home. But when she is out and about and has a few minutes to kill, your site is basically unusable when she hits it on her iPhone 8.

What’s the big deal, right? Finding a restaurant is one thing, but who searches for medical procedures on their phone?

You’d be surprised. Recent studies show that mobile search has now passed desktop search. In fact, of all internet usage, 60 percent is now done on mobile devices. Surprisingly, this includes mobile search for health services. Hitwise research from 2016 found that 68 percent of search for health services was done on mobile devices. That number has probably increased since then. That might not be the case when researching something elaborate, such as shoulder arthroscopy, but it is definitely the case when someone is thinking about a reputable source for a Restylane session.

From our first discussions with a client about their med spa site design, mobile is a central topic. While we love the larger canvas that desktop design affords us, we also continually ask how that larger design will adapt to mobile. Our mobile-responsive sites automatically minimize certain design facets and menu placements to work perfectly on a phone or tablet, while still leaving no question that the desktop site and mobile site are for the same practice.

Google Presents How Patients Search on Google for Medical Practices

A recent webinar we hosted with Google discussing how patients are searching for healthcare providers online.

Sticky isn’t just for the candy store

Sticky menus are important in today’s med spa website design. This simply means creating layouts where menus are there when the user needs them, eliminating the need for the user to scroll or click backwards to find what they are looking for.

Derm website design

Here’s how we make our menus sticky.

We’ve found that users scrolling down a page are usually engaging with the page content. In a med spa website, this could be a patient reading about Vollure, the newest Juvederm offering. But when the user moves back upwards, he or she is usually looking for a menu or contact info.

Question is — how can we put a menu there when the user is halfway down a lengthy page? On our desktop designs, we do this by subtly leaving an overlay menu at the very top of the page at all times. That way, no matter where the user is on the page, the link to the practice phone or other menu pages is right there. On mobile, we don’t have the option of permanently using that top space with a static menu. So, when the user is moving down a page, we hide any menus. But as soon as he or she moves upward, an overlay menu appears at the top of the phone with a link to the phone and other menu shortcuts.

Sticky menus are just another feature of how we make our med spa websites ultimately user-friendly. And that doesn’t change between desktop and mobile.

Show them the results

Some med spas are reluctant to utilize “before and after” galleries, as they don’t perform dramatic surgical procedures such as facelifts or breast augmentation. But that thinking is a mistake. At Advice, we build every med spa site with a before and after gallery because potential patients use these photos to gauge the value and relevance of a procedure they may be considering.

While facials probably don’t merit before and after photos, liposuction or chemical peels surely do. Kybella provides amazing reductions in double chins. Dermal fillers and Botox do the same with wrinkles and volume loss. When working with a practice, we help decide which procedures make for great before and after galleries and then build them into the site.

Multimedia Content

Google loves content. Gone are the days of bare bones bullet-point copy. Patients like detailed descriptions of procedures and Google loves it for organic search. Even more so, patients and Google love a variety of media. Does the provider of your laser equipment have animations detailing the procedures the equipment delivers? Let’s plop a box with that animation right in the midst of the procedure description. Users like to watch those kinds of animations. The same is true of video. This can be anything — tours of your offices, showing how a procedure is done, even testimonials from happy patients.

Photos, videos, and animations all help engage visitors to your med spa site. Google rewards you for varied content and for how your site users engage with it. The reward? Ranking your practice higher in organic search, meaning more potential patients can find you.
