The Relationship Between Website Architecture and SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and the architecture of a website are deeply connected. Without proper Web design, SEO cannot reach its maximum potential.   1. Google is the be-all-and-end-all of search engines, as far as the current face of the Internet is concerned. Basically, in order to have Google pay attention to your website, you have to code, design, and optimize the pages in Google’s “language.” This is why using effective URL structure is so important. Google will not pay attention to URLs that are series of numbers and symbols. A good URL uses hyphens between keywords that directly describe what is on that page. A good example of an effective URL is “www.advicemedia.com/blog/seo-facts-for-marketers” an ineffective URL would look like this, “www.advicemedia.com/?sfm/72988/Blg724.” The second example doesn’t communicate any useful information Google.
  2. Easy navigation is critical in SEO. If visitors to your webpage can’t easily find what they’re looking for, they’ll give up fast. When visitors come to your page, you want them to stay there, and click through to other pages within your site. If the navigation bar is confusing, overly designed, or glitchy, visitors are likely to leave your site. Limit menus to 6-7 selections, anything more than that is unnecessary and unlikely to get clicked through. Items in the navigation bar should be using SEO keywords.
  3. Optimizing images is essential to assisting your webpage’s SEO potential. Your medical practice logo, and any other important images on your webpage should be the minimum size that they can be to still be effective with the appropriate tags coded to them. Smaller images and logos load faster. If a desktop webpage takes more than 3 seconds to load, visitors are likely to move on to another site. Patience is extended to 5 seconds for mobile users.
  4. Keyword research should start at the inception of design. What are people searching for as it pertains to your medical practice? What do people want to know?
